Academic Integrity and Grading
Possible grades that faculty members can give students are as follows:
“F” Grade on Assignment. Students who receive this grade can drop the course within the drop period.
“F” Grade for the Course. Students who receive this grade cannot drop this course during the semester but can retake the course the next semester or at another time. After a student retakes the course, the grade earned will replace the original F grade.
FX Grade for the Course. The FX grade denotes academic dishonesty. Students who receive this grade must complete an educational sanction(s). If a student fails to complete the educational sanction(s) within the semester, the faculty member will enter a “FX” grade as a final grade. The “FX” grade will remain on the student’s grade report until the student completes the sanction(s). Once the sanction(s) is complete, the faculty member must submit a
Change of Grade form to the Registrar. If a student does not complete the sanction(s), the FX grade will be attached to the student’s transcript permanently.
Suggested Educational Sanctions
Possible Academic Integrity Sanctions could include: Rewriting the paper/assignment; watching an academic integrity DVD and writing a response, writing an essay about plagiarism, fabrication, or cheating; attending a seminar on issues of ethics, social responsibility or academic integrity or other activities that will help students understand academic dishonesty prevention.
End-of-Semester Final Grade Submission
Students Who Do Not Sign the Sanction Sheet
At the end of the semester, if a faculty member is not able to contact a student to inform him or her of an Academic Integrity violation and/or sign the Academic Integrity Sanction Sheet, the faculty member will still turn in all paperwork to the AI Office and will give the student the grade that he or she has earned in the class. The AI Coordinator will contact the student to find out if he or she accepts the sanction. If the student accepts the sanction, then the AI office notifies the instructor and the case is closed. If the student appeals the sanction, then the grade earned will remain in place until after the hearing. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the instructor will submit a Change of Grade Form to the Registrar.
Students who Stop Attending Class
At the end of the semester if a student stops attending class after notification of an Academic Integrity violation and fails to sign the Academic Integrity Sanction Form to indicate whether he or she will appeal or accept the sanction, the faculty member will turn in all paperwork to the AI Office and will give the student the grade that he or she has earned in the class. The AI Coordinator will find out whether the student desires to appeal or accept the sanction and will inform the faculty member. If the student accepts the sanction, then the case is closed. If the student appeals the sanction, then the grade earned will remain in place until after the hearing. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the instructor will submit a Change of Grade Form to the Registrar.
Appeals Hearings Scheduled After the Semester Grades are Submitted
At the end of the semester during final grade submission, if a student has an alleged AI violation and has indicated that he or she wants to appeal the violation and sanction, but the hearing is scheduled to occur after final grades are due, the faculty member should submit the grade the student earned in the class had the violation had not occurred. If the appeal is unsuccessful, faculty should fill out a Change of Grade Form and submit the form to the Registrar.
